“Sensation” draws inspiration from a microscopic view of the olfactory epithelium—the remarkable tissue in our noses that allows us to perceive scent. In this hidden landscape, sensory cells detect airborne molecules and send signals deeper into the brain. Scientific imaging reveals layers of cells at different stages of development and delicate bundles of nerve fibers carrying that information further into the brain.
Through bead embroidery, this unseen biological world becomes tangible. Repeating elliptical forms portray cellular layers, while flowing strands depict neural pathways translating sensation into perception. A single white crystal interrupts the pattern—an intentional motif in my work symbolizing personal experience and optimism. Within this intricate system, it represents the quiet promise that scientific discovery can spark moments of insight that reach far beyond the laboratory.
A few snapshots of “Sensation” in the making

Despite being one of the classically defined five senses, olfaction is still severely understudied. Yet, it offers a treasure trove of knowledge we can all apply in our everyday life. From fine fragrances to household products that we encounter every day, our sense of smell regularly affects our emotional state, and learning more about it can help us live a happier life.
On a more personal note, if someone would have told me during my years in graduate school that in 15 years I would be working on the sense of smell, I probably would have laughed out loud. But life has a funny way of making us take unexpected turns and twists. It never crossed my mind how studying olfaction could be related to my previous experience, and how fascinating this field is.
